چکیده

A starving bacterial cell may continue to respire for some time; Mycobacterium tuberculosis for example, retained an appreciable respiration, even after starving for 15 days, (Loebel, Shorr and Richardson, 1933). Stier and Stannard (1935) found that the respiration of yeast was also resistant to starvation, and proposed the term "endogenous respiration" to describe the respiration of starved cells. Bacillus cereus has a large endogenous respiration which persists for some time. These organisms are all grampositive. Sevag (1933) has suggested that this character is related to high endogenous respiration, for he found that butyric acid bacilli with a low endogenous respiration failed to retain Gram's stain. Evidence is given below which shows that, in the case of B. cereus, the gram-positive character and the high endogenous respiration are both associated with a high content of fats in the cell.

Influence of 1-aminoethoxyvinylglycine hydrochloride and α-naphthalene acetic acid on fruit retention, quality, evolved ethylene, and respiration in apples

Effects of 1-aminoethoxyvinylglycine hydrochloride (AVG or Aviglycine HCl or ReTain) and α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) on fruit retention, fruit quality, eveloved ethylene, and respiration in ‘Rome Beauty’ and three ‘Delicious’ apple cultivars (Malus domestica Borkh.) were studied.  The experimental trees were treated with either AVG, applied at 120 g a.i. per 935 L. ha-1 or NAA, applied at t...

Bacillus cereus infection in stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Siluriformes: Heteropneustidae) and their recovery by Argemone mexicana seed extract

Mass mortality of stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis, was observed in a fish farm of Kulgaria, Burdwan in West Bengal, India. The cumulative mortality rates reached up to 5% of the total fish in the farm per day. The clinical signs of the affected fish showed ulcers on the skin which gradually grew in size and progressed to form ulcerous dermatitis. Clinical signs of catfish experimental...

Cisplatin cytotoxicity is dependent on mitochondrial respiration in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Objective(s): To understand the role of mitochondrial respiration in cisplatin sensitivity, we have employed wild-type and mitochondrial DNA depleted Rho0 yeast cells. Materials and Methods: Wild type and Rho0 yeast cultured in fermentable and non-fermentable sugar containing media, were studied for their sensitivity against cisplatin by monitoring growth curves, oxygen consumption, pH changes ...

Study of the Effect of Increase in The Rate of Respiration on PaCo2 in the Anesthetized Children

SUMMERY A controlled double -blind clinical trial was performed in 40 normal children, with no underlying pulmonary pathology, who underwent surgery. The objective was to study the effect of increase in the rate of respiration (RR) on PaCo2 in the anesthetized child . The RR of the control group (n=20) RR was set at 40/min. In the study patients (n=20) RR was set at 40/min. For the first 30 mi...
